More Ads For EA Games
Microsoft and Electronic Arts (EA) have signed a deal to include more ads in EA’s game titles. Microsoft’s Spring 2006 ad division purchase, Massive in-game advertising, will be providing the ad technology. Massive’s approach to ad serving is on a relevant basis. When a gamer plays online, ads can be changed live in different locations of a game, while off-line players will see stock ads.
The in-game ads will be placed in locations that blend in with the gaming environment to enhance the realism, such as billboards or sports stadium ads. Titles will include both Xbox 360 and PC based games. A short list of new games that will serve ads include,
- Madden NFL 08 (PC and Xbox 360)
- Nascar 08 (Xbox 360)
- NHL 08 (Xbox 360)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (PC and Xbox 360)
- Skate (Xbox 360)
EA’s senior director of in-game advertising states, “EA is committed to providing both great entertainment experiences for gamers and effective advertising solutions for brands and marketers. Massive has proven its ability to deliver relevant ads in a seamless, nondisruptive way that enhances the realism of the game environment. We look forward to building on the strong progress we’ve made to date.”
EA has already experimented with in-game advertising in its popular title, Battlefield 2142. There was a lot of talk and anger about in-game ads in the Battlefield series before the game even released. Battlefield fans were even demanding boycotts. Much of the opposition was unwarranted. The ads included in Battlefield 2142 are hardly noticeable and blend quite well into the environment. EA will be taking the same approach in its new ad campaign.
