Microsoft: Some Games Will Require Hard Drive

Just a week ago Microsoft issued a statement to GamePro claiming all Xbox 360 games will work without a hard drive. Now they are saying some games will indeed require a hard drive. I knew the statement was bogus in the first place.

Microsoft gave the go-ahead for massive multiplayer online developers to be able to create games that will require a hard drive. “Feel free to require 30GB for your game - that’s just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller,” a Microsoft representative told a group of developers while speaking at GameFest.

MMO developers will now have unrestricted hard drive space, and will be able to create a single master storage file to place on the user’s Xbox 360 console. They must however indicate the amount of disk space required on the cover of each game.

The reason behind the first claim was most likely because Microsoft didn’t want to discourage buyers from purchasing the Xbox 360 core model. 20 percent of Xbox 360 owners still don’t own a hard drive. Without one they would be limited to the games they could buy.
