Gizmodo Banned From CES

Gizmodo may be banned from attending CES after a stunt by one of Gizmodo’s staff members at CES 2008. Gizmodo is owned by Gawker Media, which owns several blogging sites covering various news media. Gizmodo concentrates on gadgets and hardware in particular.

Cnet.com has posted a blog entry claiming Gizmodo is now barred from attending CES due to Gizmodo’s prank, which involved shutting off several televisions displays during the event. Cnet.com received this statement from the conference’s organizer, the Consumer Electronics Association.

“We have been informed of inappropriate behavior on the show floor by a credentialed media attendee from the Web site Gizmodo, owned by Gawker Media. Specifically, the Gizmodo staffer interfered with the exhibitor booth operations of numerous companies, including disrupting at least one press event. The Gizmodo staffer violated the terms of CES media credentials and caused harm to CES exhibitors. This Gizmodo staffer has been identified and will be barred from attending any future CES events. Additional sanctions against Gizmodo and Gawker Media are under discussion.”

The punishment seems a bit harsh for the entire Gizmodo staff. Barring the individuals responsible for the prank would be more appropriate. Although, Gizmodo and Gawker Media have posted the prank on the Gizmodo website, so the entire company clearly thinks it wasn’t a big deal.
