PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 In January 08

Sales figures from NDP from January 2008 show the PlayStation 3 outselling the Xbox 360 for the month.  This is a small victory for Sony as they have been trailing in sales figures for quite some time.

During January 2008 Nintendo sold 274,000 Wii consoles, Sony sold 269,000 PlayStation 3s, while Microsoft trailed with 230,000 Xbox 360s.  Overall sales dropped by 6 percent compared to last year’s January, although on a weekly basis sales were up by 18 percent.

Microsoft contributes the lack of sales of the Xbox 360 to a shortage of consoles.  “Given the huge number of hardware systems sold in December, inventory shortages could be the biggest contributor to the softer-than-expected sales,” says NPD’s Anita Frazier.

Hand-held sales figures show Nintendo selling 251,000 Nintendo DS, and Sony selling 230,000 PSPs.
