I recently decided to upgrade my Playstation 3 hard drive just for the fun of it. I had an original 40GB model and bought a 250GB replacement on Newegg. If I had known it was so easy to upgrade the hard drive, I would have probably done it a while ago since I like messing with computers and hardware.
It seems Sony’s recent incarnation of the PS3 is a big hit in America. Combined with the $100 price drop and 120GB hard drive upgrade, the PS3 slim is a bargain compared to previous PS3 versions.
Check out this video showing off the new PS3 slim releasing September 1st in North America. The PS3 slim is 33% smaller, 36% lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive.
EA’s chief creative officer, Rich Hilleman, is predicting that Sony and Microsoft will most like concentrate on updated to their current video consoles before re-engineering their current technologies.
“I expected we’ll see a PlayStation 3.5 before we see a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox 560 before we see an Xbox 720,” he said.
2old2play.com has come to find a possible price drop on the Playstation 3 coming this March. One of the 2old2play community members learned of the price drop during a visit to an EB Games store. According to an EB Games employee, the store is preparing for a $99 price drop on March 22nd, and that Sony plans on informing the press the day before.
The price drop is on the 80GB version, bringing the price down to $299. This rumor of a price drop comes about after third party publishers urge Sony to drop the price on the console to be more inline with the Wii and Xbox 360.
It was recently announced that the Nintendo DSi will be releasing this spring for the United States and United Kingdom. The U.S. will get their hands on the new DSi on April 5th and the U.K. on April 3rd. The DSi was released in Japan back in November 2008.
In an interview with Playstation Magazine, SCEI head Kazuo Hirai, explained that the Playstation 3 was intentionally designed to be troublesome for developers to design games for.
Hirai stated, “We don’t provide the ‘easy to program for’ console that [developers] want, because ‘easy to program for’ means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?”
As many of you gamers know, Sony’s Playstation 3 has trailed in the “Big Three” console war for quite some time now. The Nintendo Wii continues to dominate in sales, while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continues to outsell the PS3. The most obvious reason as to why the PS3 still continues to be the lowest selling console of the three is its price. The Wii is currently selling at $249.99 USD, the Xbox 360 Pro sells for $299.99 USD, and the PS3 continues to sell at $399.99 USD. It is no wonder that the PS3 trails the pack in sales, it costs more in addition to a smaller selection of games.
The reason the PS3 still sells for such a high price is because it costs so much to manufacture the console. Sony still hasn’t made any money on PS3 sales due to its high manufacturing costs. Recent upgrades to the hardware will ease the manufacturing costs, but the PS3 will still sell at its current price for quite some time. Of course, many people believe the PS3 is a bargain because it has Blu-ray functionality while at the same time being a gaming console. But, with the falling prices of Blu-ray players, the bargain isn’t so great anymore.
