World of Warcraft Reaches 10 Million Subscribers

The players of World of Warcraft continue to climb, now reaching the 10 million mark. Subscriptions continued to grow through the 2007 holiday season. World of Warcraft now hosts more than 2 million subscribers in Europe, more than 2.5 million in North America, and approximately 5.5 million in Asia.

“It’s very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we’re looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead.”

Wings Of The Goddess Coming Nov 20

Final Fantasy XISquare Enix announced today the next expansion for Final Fantasy XI, Wings Of The Goddess will be available in North America on November 20, 2007. The expansion will be available on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PC.

Wings Of The Goddess will include new jobs, new characters, and new adventures in the world of Vana’diel.

Gaming Industry Offers New Approach To Piracy

At the video gaming convention in Leipzig, Germany, a few industry executives revealed some comments about a new business method for MMO video games. Instead of selling MMO up front to the consumer, video gaming companies will offer the games for free with payed enhancement features. This so called “MMO-lite” video game is a new approach towards the effort to combat piracy of video games, especially in the Asian market, where copyright infringement is a big problem.

During the convention Ubisoft’s Chief Executive Yves Guillemot gave his insight into the new MMO business approach. “They all have the ability to get it, and if they want to progress you can sell (enhancements) to them,” he told Reuters.

Other companies have already pioneered the method with game titles such as Yulong and Legend of Mir II, created by the Chinese companies, CDC Corporation and Shanda Interactive Entertainment.

Turbine and Codemasters Online Gaming have announced the release date of Book 10: The City Of The Kings for the Lord Of The Rings online MMO. The new update will be available to subscribers on August 20, 2007, and will include over 100 new quests, significant enhancements to monster play, and introduces the Reputation and Bartering systems.

Age Of ConanFuncom has announced a new release date for Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures today. The highly anticipated MMO is now set to release on March 25, 2008. Funcom is delaying the release to further develop and polish the game.

Blizzard Owner Raking In The Money

The parent company of Blizzard Entertainment, Vivendi Games, is reporting an astonishing revenue of $685.4 million for the first half of this year. That is a 69% increase in revenue as compared to the first half of 2006. The success of Vivendi Games is attributed to the overwhelming popularity of the World Of Warcraft franchise.

Burning Crusade was the latest in the line of expansion packs for the series, which sold for a record number of 3.5 million copies in only a months time. The user base of WoW has also risen dramatically to 9 million, set back in June.
