PS3 Fanboy has received some information about Sony’s Home Beta. The new update brings the beta to 0.8.3 with 1.0.0 being the released version. Improvements to the UI and graphical system make for a much more functional experience.

PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 In January 08

Sales figures from NDP from January 2008 show the PlayStation 3 outselling the Xbox 360 for the month.  This is a small victory for Sony as they have been trailing in sales figures for quite some time.

During January 2008 Nintendo sold 274,000 Wii consoles, Sony sold 269,000 PlayStation 3s, while Microsoft trailed with 230,000 Xbox 360s.  Overall sales dropped by 6 percent compared to last year’s January, although on a weekly basis sales were up by 18 percent.

One Million PS3 Users Take Part In Folding@home

Sony revealed in a press release today the astounding number of PS3 users participating in Stanford’s Folding@home research project. The number of users has now surpassed one million since its introduction on the PS3 on March 22, 2007. This equates to roughly 3,000 PS3 users registering for Folding@home per day or 2 new registered users every minute worldwide.

“Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@home users,” said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead. “Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world’s most life-threatening diseases. We are grateful for the extraordinary worldwide participation by PS3 and PC users around the globe.”

Slimmer PS3 In The Works?

T3 Magazine has posted up some interesting news about a rumor of a new slimmed-down version of the PlayStation 3. Apparently this rumor came about from the recent CES show last month. “Gadget gossip” is how it’s put.

Keep in mind this is pure speculation about Sony’s upcoming version of the PS3. It was recently discovered that the 80GB version of the PS3 will be discontinued in prep for a better and badder version, most likely to include a larger hard drive and a Dual-Shock 3 controller.

120-160GB PS3 May Be In The Works

According to arstechnica and their reliable mole, Sony is in fact planning on discontinuing the 80GB PlayStation 3. In its place will most likely be a larger capacity disk drive model. The disk capacity could be from 120GB to 160GB.

Rumors last week led to word about the 80GB PS3 discontinuation, leaving only the 40GB version on the shelves. Arstechnica’s mole says Sony will continue to use their two model approach for the PS3.

80GB PS3 Being Discontinued

An anonymous Best Buy employee has sent ps3fanboy a scan of an internal memo revealing the discontinuation of the 80GB PlayStation 3. The memo states,

The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time. It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of the PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time. This means that there currently isn’t a version that is PS2 compatible. At this time, Sony hasn’t made any announcements about new products.

PSP To Get MTV UMD Content

Sony has announced that it is now offering MTV television content on Universal Media Disc (UMD) for the PlayStation Portable for $14.99 each. This is the first such collaboration between SCEA and a major TV content provider, and will include hit TV show such as “Jackass”, and “Wildboyz”.

“This collaboration with MTV is a key first step in meeting the needs of our consumers, who are utilizing PSP as a video player more than ever and are thirsting for more content, particularly short-form videos,” said Phil Rosenberg, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development, SCEA. “MTV’s programming is hugely popular, and SCEA can utilize our internal resources to appropriately manage the publishing and distribution of these hit shows on UMD. GTA IV Releases April 2008

GTA 4 CoverRockstar Games today announced the release date for Grand Theft Auto IV. The action packed third-person shooter we release in stores worldwide on April 29, 2008. GTA IV will be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

Play PC Games On PS3 With StreamMyGame Linux Player

StreamMyGame has launced its Linux Player application, which allows you to play PC games through you PlayStation 3. This technology is useful for those of you with insufficient computer hardware for the latest games on the market.

The Linux Player application allows you to play games remotely through dedicated StreamMyGame servers. This gives you remote access to the game through another computer or console, including the PlayStation 3.

Vader And Yoda In Soul Calibur IV

Yoda Soul CaliburIt’s true. NAMCO BANDAI Games has announced the appearance of Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur IV for the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 console. Unfortunately both will not appear on the same systems. Vader will only be available on the PlayStation 3, while Yoda is stuck on the Xbox 360.
