After seven months of intense competition, FIFA, EA and PlayStation today congratulate the 32 finalists who have secured their place in the Grand Final of the fourth annual FIFA Interactive World Cup. Over 25,000 players competed in the online leg via PLAYSTATION®Network. The finalists will compete to become the FIFA Interactive World Player of the Year at the Sony Center in Berlin on 24 May.
”I am very impressed with the level of the participants. It is clear that they have been practicing hard, and like any football event, practice is one of the most important things. The FIFA Interactive World Cup is establishing itself as a premier gaming tournament, and the only one under the FIFA banner”, explained Chuck Blazer, who added “I think it is apt that there are now 32 competitors which mirrors the number of teams in the FIFA World Cup. It is no surprise that Nintendo is doing well in sales, they tend to showboat quite a bit about it. Nintendo’s 2007 fiscal year ended with huge profits. They posted sales of more than 1.67 trillion yen, an increase of 73 percent over the prior year, and reported FY08 operating profits of more than 487 billion yen, a year-over-year increase of 115.6 percent.
Nintendo is also projected an increase in projected shipments of the Wii console. For the fiscal year that began April 1, 2008, Nintendo forecasts global Wii console shipments increasing to 25 million.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced today that the Playstation Home closed beta will be expanded to more registered users in Summer 2008. Unfortunately Sony also pushed back the Open Beta until Fall 2008, stating the need for more time to refine the service.

Today Rockstar Games announced the release date for Midnight Club: Los Angeles for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Midnight Club: LA Remix for the PSP also received a release date. Midnight Club: Los Angeles is set to release on September 9th in North America and September 12th in Europe. LA Remix will release September 9th.
“From the beginning, Midnight Club has been about street racing in a open-world,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “With our team at Rockstar San Diego we have developed a game that we feel once again pushes the boundaries and expectations of what a racing game can be.”

The month of March brought Nintendo continuing success in sales. According to the independent NPD Group, which monitors retail activity in the video game industry, more than 720,000 Wii™ systems sold in March, representing the highest monthly sales total outside of holiday months (November or December) to date, while Nintendo DS™ also sold through nearly 700,000 systems.
Nintendo also finished with the top-selling U.S. game of March. Super Smash Bros.® Brawl, which launched March 9, came in at No. 1 with 2.7 million units sold.
